I have always loved art. Art is everywhere and everything. As a child I was known as 'the artistic one’. My second sister was 'the smart one' and my little sister 'the sweet one’. I see art in everything from setting a table to picking an outfit to building a house. Having beauty around me is not just a desire but a necessity, a need.
Although I was not trained as an artist, over the years I have been mentored by some wonderful artists who have shared their knowledge and techniques. They gave me not only insight into how to draw and paint but what it means to see myself as an artist. Most important perhaps was learning to trust my own instincts.
As a young woman there was not much time for painting while I raised my two daughters as a single parent. Cooking, quilting, homemaking and decorating helped satisfy my artistic yearning. I owned an oriental carpet business and this engaged me with art of a different kind. I was surrounded daily by beautiful, unique, handmade Middle Eastern and Central Asian rugs, textiles and objects of daily life that used colors, techniques, and designs handed down over centuries one women to another unique from village to village, much like quilting designs in our country. This experience enriched my life with travel to many different places and afforded me the opportunity to meet people from different cultures with very different world views. I spent time in Turkish villages talking to village women and watching them weave just as they had for a thousand years. These experiences gave me an awareness and deep appreciation for a woman's impulse to make her home beautiful be it a tent, a yurt or a townhouse.
Today I have embraced my vocation as a painter. I feel the desire to paint bubble up inside me. I am blessed to spend my days as I like, watching the ocean and sky change moment to moment, walking early on a misty beach smelling the salty air,
